At his last concert in Stockholm, Elton John bids farewell to his fans: A Legendary Goodbye to an Iconic Career. Surrounded by devoted fans from all corners of the world, the legendary 76-year-old musician, adorned in a sparkling tailcoat embellished with rhinestones and red-tinted glasses, takes his place at the piano amidst thunderous applause to kick off his final performance with one of his beloved songs, “Bennie and the Jets.” As the crowd adorns themselves with shimmering blue and red glasses, he seamlessly transitions into “Philadelphia Freedom” and “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues,” captivating the audience.
For over two mesmerizing hours, at his Elton John last concert, he bids farewell to his fans, while continuing to delight them with his melodies. He expresses heartfelt gratitude towards his loyal supporters, as well as his band members and team, some of whom have accompanied him for over four decades. “I want to pay tribute to these musicians,” he declares. “They are truly incredible… and they are the best.
After a moving rendition of “Border Song” dedicated to Aretha Franklin, the iconic “I’m Still Standing” unites the 30,000 spectators at the Tele2 Arena, as they rise together in a collective demonstration of admiration and love.
Before his final performance of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” Elton John addresses his devoted audience: “I’ve had the most incredible career; it’s unbelievable. Fifty-two years of pure joy. How fortunate I am to make music! You have been absolutely fantastic. Thank you, I will never forget you. You will always be in my mind, my heart, and my soul.”
Before the encore, Elton John shares a touching message from Coldplay, who were also performing in Sweden that night, in which Chris Martin thanks Elton John for his remarkable career and unwavering dedication.
“It was incredible. I still can’t put it into words because I haven’t fully processed it,” confessed 25-year-old Finnish banker Anton Pohjonen. “It almost brings you to tears for him,” added Swedish professor Conny Johansson, who had held his tickets for four years.
For the fans, the evening promised to be an emotional rollercoaster, even before the curtain rose. “Tonight is going to be very emotional,” predicted 25-year-old Polish student Kate Bugaj, who had postponed her master’s exams to follow her idol’s tour, waiting outside the stadium for hours before the show.
Jeanie Kincer, a middle-aged fan from Kentucky, USA, wanted to “be there for the end, as I was too young to be there at the beginning.” For the occasion, she wore red suspenders and a red, yellow, and brown t-shirt, a nearly perfect replica of the clothing Elton John had chosen for his first concert in Stockholm in 1971.
With this final tour, Expressen newspaper assures that ‘Elton John Last Concert’ marks the close of an important chapter in the history of rock ‘n’ roll.
Saturday marked the second consecutive sold-out night at the stadium, as the British star concluded his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which began five years ago but was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and a hip operation in 2021.
In total, Elton John performed 330 concerts before Stockholm, traversing Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road journey.
“For the most lucrative tour in world history, ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ is surprisingly modest,” marveled Dagens Nyheter, while also celebrating the infectious enthusiasm of the artist, who has sold over 300 million records. The newspaper exclaimed, “All reservations are easy to forget when Elton John, dressed in a harlequin sequined blazer and smiling ear to ear, pounds on his grand piano as if everything depended on it.”
In total, the 76-year-old artist performed in front of 6.25 million fans throughout this farewell tour.
